Isopropanol is produced via the mass balance approach (ISCC PLUS): a certified share of renewable raw materials is used in production and allocated to the end product on a bookkeeping basis. The result is a chemically identical, functionally equivalent drop-in product with a reduced CO₂ footprint — no reformulation needed.
Isopropanol is a colourless, readily volatile liquid with a characteristic alcohol odour. It is fully miscible with water, ethanol and most organic solvents and evaporates without residue.

What is isopropanol (IPA)?
Isopropanol (2-propanol, isopropyl alcohol, IPA) is a colourless, volatile alcohol with the formula C₃H₈O (CAS 67-63-0, EC 200-661-7). It is fully miscible with water, boils at 82.6 °C and has a flash point of 12 °C.
Which isopropanol grades does PENPET GREEN supply?
Two grades: technical grade with a purity of at least 99.8 % (GC) and max. 0.1 % water, and pharma grade meeting the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur. 11.0) with at least 99.9 % purity and max. 2 mg/kg benzene. Both specifications and the technical data sheet are available above as PDF in German and English.
What is the difference between technical and pharma grade?
The pharma grade meets Ph. Eur. 11.0, has a higher minimum purity (99.9 % instead of 99.8 %) and additionally limits benzene and total impurities; diethyl ether, diisopropyl ether, acetone, methanol and 1-propanol are reported on the certificate of analysis. The technical grade is intended for coatings, printing inks, electronics cleaning and synthesis.
What does “CO₂-reduced via mass balance (ISCC PLUS)” mean?
A certified share of renewable raw materials is used in production and allocated to the end product on a bookkeeping basis. The isopropanol is chemically identical to conventional material and can be used without reformulation; the CO₂ benefit results from the certified allocation, not from a physically measurable bio-based share.
