Hydrogenated Castor Oil (HCO) is produced by catalytic hydrogenation of castor oil. The double bonds of ricinoleic acid are saturated – resulting in a white, hard wax (melting point 85–88°C) that is chemically very stable and oxidation resistant. PENPET GREEN Chemicals supplies HCO under its own label.
HCO acts as a gelling agent, viscosity modifier and structuring agent. In lipsticks it increases durability and stability; in cosmetic emulsions it provides structure.
