Bio-based isoamyl alcohol (3-methyl-1-butanol) is obtained by distillation from fusel oil – a by-product of bio-ethanol fermentation from renewable raw materials. It is chemically identical to petrochemically produced isoamyl alcohol and suitable as a direct drop-in replacement without reformulation.
Isoamyl alcohol is a colourless, clear liquid with a characteristic odour and good solvency for resins, oils and nitrocellulose. As a building block for isoamyl acetate and other esters it is a key raw material for the flavour and fragrance industry.
A life cycle assessment according to ISO 14040/14044 is available for our bio-based isoamyl alcohol (cradle-to-gate, European Commission Environmental Footprint method EF 3.1). The study was prepared by ACV Brasil on the basis of primary data from the manufacturer (production period July 2023 to June 2024). The product carbon footprint covers sugarcane and ethanol production, fusel oil recovery and transport, and distillation to isoamyl alcohol.
Base scenario: fossil emissions without crediting biogenic carbon. The biogenic CO₂ content of 2.5 kg CO₂/kg is reported as additional information and may only be credited where the carbon remains permanently bound in the end product. Study version 1.1 (March 2025), internally reviewed; external critical review not yet completed – the results are not intended for comparative assertions against other products.
